Healthcare’s digital shift to sustainability
suHCO will address the common challenge of transitioning the healthcare sector to sustainability by procuring a horizontal digital planning and execution-driven system. The Buyers Group represents core stakeholders in health and care settings (central procurement, hospitals, care homes, surgeries, home care etc.). The suHCO-solution will empower these Health Care Organisations (HCO) to act sustainably by tackling four areas of needs: 1) find existing sustainable solutions (information); 2) design and implement context-aware strategies ensuring safety and quality of healthcare (operation); 3) orchestrate stakeholder interactions (organisation); 4) shift mindsets and upskill staff. The AI deployed in suHCO is to assess circular solutions against regulation and procedures. Uptake will cut materials, waste, and pollution, and advance One Health globally.

The future solution is expected to integrate sustainability knowledge, regulatory requirements, standards, best practices and relevant data sources, providing users with practical guidance tailored to their organisational context. It should also support sustainable procurement processes, impact assessment, reporting activities and organisational change management.
suHCO (Systemic Sustainability Transition Solution for Health Care Organisations) is a European project funded under the Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement No. 101226802) and implemented through a Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) scheme. The project aims to support health and care organisations in their transition towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible models by fostering the development of innovative digital solutions. Through the PCP process, suHCO will procure research and development services for the creation of an AI-enabled digital platform capable of helping healthcare organisations assess their sustainability performance, identify improvement opportunities, plan and implement actions, monitor progress, and support evidence-based decision-making. The future solution is expected to integrate sustainability knowledge, regulatory requirements, standards, best practices and relevant data sources, providing users with practical guidance tailored to their organisational context. It should also support sustainable procurement processes, impact assessment, reporting activities and organisational change management. The project is driven by a Buyers Group composed of healthcare organisations from Spain, Italy and Wales. The solutions developed during the PCP will be progressively designed, prototyped and validated in real healthcare environments to ensure their relevance, usability and scalability. By bringing together healthcare providers, technology developers and sustainability experts, suHCO seeks to stimulate innovation and contribute to the sustainability objectives of European health systems.
There are dramatic changes in the demographic development concerning the number of senior citizens in our societies. Increased life expectancy and lower birth rates are the main factors driving the development of the ageing population where the share of older age groups are increasing – not at least those groups of who are in the most need of long-term health care and practical help. The ageing population, combined with the vastly improved treatment of diseases like diabetes and cancer, dramatically increases, furthermore, the number of Danes living with one or more chronic diseases. Finally, does the demographic development also influence, of course, the size of the labour force; that is, the labor market challenge is that the labor force is declining relative to the number of children and senior citizens, pointing to a tighter labor market. Therefore, are issues of availability of labor and recruitment problems at the forefront of the Danish labor market discussions.
